National Firewood Bank
Working Group
About the Working Group
The Working Group creates a space for firewood banks to learn from one another and strengthen their operations. By bringing firewood bank leaders together, the Working Group fills critical knowledge gaps related to launching, managing, and improving programs, ensuring that lessons learned in one community can benefit others across the network.
The Working Group unites not only to support one another and other firewood banks, but also to help the broader public understand the role and impact of firewood banks in their communities. They advance public education and awareness efforts to highlight home heating challenges, the ongoing need for volunteers and funding, and the community benefits of operating a firewood bank. The Alliance for Green Heat currently helps organize the monthly meetings and manages the online space for the Working Group to share materials.

Why and How We Came Together
In March of 2025, faced with the possibility that the Firewood Bank Assistance Program would no longer be funded, AGH sought out ways to continue supporting the firewood bank movement. The idea for a “national firewood bank association” was tempting and seemed like a logical next step. AGH gathered names and contact information for the most active firewood banks, paying attention to include diverse structures and types of programs as well as geographical diversity. In April of 2025, AGH contacted 12 firewood banks, asking them a series of questions about their thoughts on a national wood bank association, and put out an open call in our monthly Firewood Bank Commons for interested banks to join the first meeting.
